Application of elemental chemostratigraphy to refine the stratigraphy of the Adavale Basin, Queensland

A prerequisite to understanding the evolution and resource potential of a basin is establish reliable stratigraphic framework that enables correlation rock units across multiple depocentres. Establishing model for Adavale Basin challenging due its structurally complexity, lack well penetration lateral changes in facies. Biostratigraphy appears broad-scale, despite providing chronostratigraphic control Lower Devonian Gumbardo Formation when combined with U/Pb zircon geochronology, rest succession hampered by microfossil assemblages their poor preservation. The aim this study an independent chemostratigraphic using whole inorganic geochemistry. Within study, total 1489 cuttings samples from 10 wells were analysed Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry Mass geochemistry, order zonation scheme. Based on key elemental ratios selected reflect feldspars, clay minerals provenance, Devonian-aged stratigraphy characterised into four mega-sequences encompass (Mega-sequence 1); Eastwood Formation, Log Creek Lissoy Sandstone 2); Bury Limestone Boree Salt formations 3); Etonvale Buckabie 4).
